Ross Wagstaff: Providing opportunities and experiences for everyone

  • Posted by Chris Lincoln

Our third day of Christmas features one of Evolve’s most experience Health Mentors…Ross Wagstaff. He has made a positive impact on thousands of children around Birmingham and Coventry, both during term-time and the school holidays…

I have been a Health Mentor for eight years. During my time I have supported a number of trainees, worked as an XLR8 Course Director and completed many qualifications including CET. I was also one of the first PE Coordinators and certified Health Mentors in the company.

My favourite part about being a Health Mentor is inspiring others to be active and enjoy life through physical activity. It is great to give pupils a chance to experience sports they may never have tried. I enjoy taking the pupils to competitions to compete against others and it is even better when they return with a medal. My aim is to improve on the recent years of bronze and silver by winning the gold kitemark overall as a school for our work associated with the school games.

The hard work continues outside of school. My greatest success during the holidays is leading and supporting a team to produce high-quality XLR8 courses in order for the programme to continue running for numerous years at the same venue. The team and I must have made a big impact to earn the chance to return time after time and children always leave my courses with increased confidence and self-esteem.

Ross’ impact is clear to see when you witness him in action. The following quote underpins his expertise and is just one example of many:

“Ross is a skilled practitioner. He demonstrates excellent behaviour management and is consistent with his teaching approach. The children absolutely love PE and Ross channels this enthusiasm to get the best results from them.”
