Evolve is expanding its range of programmes by adding a new and unique secondary school mentoring programme to its successful Project HE:RO (health and wellbeing) and XLR8 (school holiday development) offers.
SLAM (Student Leadership and Mentoring) enables older pupils to take responsibility for mentoring, training and supporting younger pupils within secondary schools. Once embedded, the programme can be delivered and developed internally following initial input from an Evolve SLAM Mentor.
John Bishop, Evolve Managing Director, states that SLAM offers multiple benefits to schools and students. “Like Project HE:RO, SLAM has been devised to help develop healthier and more active pupils. However, it achieves much more than this increased learner engagement, improved employability skills and a more positive school culture being additional outcomes.”
Based in a secondary school for a minimum of two days per week, an Evolve SLAM Mentor will train Year 10 and 11 pupils to become student leaders who will eventually mentor Year 7 to 9 pupils; offer support to children from feeder primary schools; take part in social action projects within the local community and raise funds for the school or local charities.
Other benefits for students include increasing their employability skills of communication, independence and collaboration; aiding their personal development and helping the transitions between primary, secondary, further/higher education and the workplace.
John added “SLAM will develop well-rounded, confident, happy and resilient young people to become successful adults, valued by their employers and who make a positive contribution to British society.”
SLAM has been piloted in schools in the West Midlands and programme evaluations found improvements in the motivation, confidence, resilience, academic achievement and empathy of pupils involved.
